Note from Sung Lin Gun, the creator of Taoshu:
“As parents, my wife and I had a hard time finding fun Chinese books for our kids. Chinese children’s books in Singapore tend to be either didactic textbooks or too “cheem” for Singaporean kids. Thus the Taoshu Chinese books were really created out of a desperate need to make reading Chinese books fun and enjoyable for kids. Our animation studio already has expertise in creating beautiful, entertaining preschool stories, but we needed a strong pedagogy. So we teamed up with publisher Teach-A-Tot who owns a proven teach-Chinese system and voila!, Taoshu Learn Mandarin Books are born. Enjoy!”
WHAT OTHER PARENTS SAY
“We were first captivated by the Taoshu books because they really stood out in the shop’s shelves with their cute and brightly illustrated characters. Prior to this, I did not have much success finding Chinese storybooks or DVDs that could hold her short attention span so I was cautiously optimistic. We started with the Taoshu 呀齿不痛了book first and Ayla was hooked instantly. There is something about the form of the characters that really attracted her. The story was easy to follow and for a not very competent Mandarin speaker, I was able to read the story to her with little problem. I then introduced her to the DVDs and suffice to say, they went down like a dream. She now hums the opening song spontaneously and knows all the characters in all the books. Yes, we ended up buying the entire collection.
I personally like that the content is both topical and culturally interesting. The format of the DVD, with the documentary style short sections illustrating the themes covered also keeps everything real. And just so you get a balanced perspective, this is what Ayla has to say.
‘Do you like Taoshu?’
‘No!’ (starts to sing the song…)
‘Why?’
‘Because…I like Ling Ling better!’ “
Chang Lu-Lyn, mother of Ayla, age 2 yrs 8 months
“Alex loves the books and videos. The stories are funny and entertaining and the words are easy to read as they are big. The pictures are beautifully illustrated and Alex thinks they are cute and funny.”
Patricia Huang, mother of Alex age 7.
“Thanks for the humorous stories and wonderful illustrations. It is great that the use of Hanyu Pinyin is limited, but that you add a ”cheatsheet” on the last page (very valuable for me as Mandarin is not exactly my forte).
Keep those books coming!”
Leong Shieh Yen, mother of Michelle age 5.
“The Taoshu books are a great introduction for pre-schoolers into the world of Chinese story books. The illustrations are colourful and cute; the fonts are simple, hence easily recognisable; and the stories which centre around a simple problem-solution theme are compelling to read yet easily understood by children.”
Corinne, mother of Li-En, age 5 and Kae-Lin age 3.
