The text and illustrations are deliberately separated, to enable the child to focus on the Chinese characters, thereby reinforcing the vocabulary recognition process.
The hanyu pinyin for the word ‘kite’ (feng zheng) appeared on the first page, but not for the subsequent pages. We believe this method introduces new vocabulary to the children and gently reinforces it without an over-reliance on pinyin.
The size of the text is enlarged to help young children recognise the intricate brush strokes of the characters, and the font carefully chosen to help with their writing. (bi hua)
